THE DIGEST
Neighbor Day
Pasadena Neighbor Day returns this Sunday, January 19, at Wild Parrot Brewing Co. in East Pasadena with a renewed sense of purpose to aid in the recovery efforts following the Eaton Fire. What was once a casual community celebration now serves as a rallying point to support local artists and neighbors affected by the disaster. The free festival, which features live performances, food, and a chance to connect with fellow residents, highlights Pasadena’s commitment to coming together in times of need. Many of the participating performers have been personally impacted by the fire, underscoring the importance of solidarity and mutual support. Join this heartfelt effort to rebuild, celebrate resilience, and strengthen the bonds that make Pasadena such a special community.
Pasadena Heroes
The recent Eaton Fire has brought profound loss to Pasadena and its neighboring communities, yet amidst the devastation, stories of resilience and heroism have surfaced, showcasing the indomitable spirit of our residents.
In Altadena, Santiago Martinez, a dedicated gardener, demonstrated extraordinary bravery. As the Eaton Fire threatened the neighborhood, Martinez tirelessly hosed down his client Carla Saenz’s property, protecting it from encroaching flames. Tragically, Martinez’s own home was lost to the fire. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to support him during this challenging time.
Tristin Perez, a 34-year-old carpenter, chose to stay behind during evacuation orders to defend his home and those of his neighbors. Using water pitchers, Perez managed to save three homes on his block, even as others nearby succumbed to the flames. His courageous actions underscore the solidarity and determination prevalent in our community.
Amidst the chaos of the fire, a firefighter’s compassionate act provided solace. While battling the blaze, he encountered a lost dog and took a moment to comfort the frightened animal, ensuring its safety. This touching interaction highlights the humanity present even in the most harrowing situations.
Recognizing the immediate needs of displaced families, Saint Andrew Catholic School in Pasadena transformed its gymnasium into a sanctuary for those affected by the fire. The principal emphasized the importance of human connection during crises, stating, “You can hug them, pray with them, listen to them as best you can. What else is there to do?” This initiative provided both physical shelter and emotional support to the community.
These narratives of courage, compassion, and community strength serve as beacons of hope, reminding us of the resilience that defines Pasadena. As we continue to support one another, these stories inspire us to rebuild and emerge stronger together.
