THE DIGEST
Caltech Professor Warns of Debris Flow Risks After Eaton Fire
Caltech professor Michael Lamb recently adjusted his original lecture at the Beckman Auditorium at Caltech to address the pressing risks of debris flows following the Eaton Canyon fire, which scorched over 300 acres of vegetation near Pasadena. Lamb explained how wildfires destabilize hillsides by removing vegetation, leaving the soil vulnerable to fast-moving debris flows during heavy rains. Highlighting the growing frequency of such events due to climate change, Lamb urged the community to stay informed and prepare for the cascading challenges posed by wildfires and extreme weather.
The importance of this issue is underscored by Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent executive order to protect fire-affected areas across California during the rainy season. The order expedites resources to prevent debris flows, flooding, and mudslides in vulnerable regions, demonstrating the state’s recognition of these growing threats. Lamb’s lecture, combined with statewide efforts, emphasizes the need for research, preparedness, and proactive measures to mitigate the risks of debris flows in fire-prone areas like the San Gabriel Mountains.

PUSD Community Gathering
The Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) recently hosted a Community Healing Gathering at the McKinley School Auditorium to provide support and solidarity following recent challenges faced by the school community. The event featured resources such as grief counselors, social workers, and community leaders offering emotional and mental health support to attendees. PUSD Superintendent Brian McDonald emphasized the district’s commitment to fostering a safe and caring environment for students, staff, and families. The gathering aimed to promote healing, resilience, and unity within the community by addressing shared concerns and providing avenues for ongoing support.
