THE DIGEST
Free Sandbags for Incoming Rain
In preparation for expected rainfall this week, the City of Pasadena is providing free sandbags to residents starting February 4. Pre-filled sandbags and self-serve sand and bags will be available at two locations: Robinson Park’s south parking lot (1081 North Fair Oaks) and Victory Park’s Altadena Drive lot (2575 Paloma Street). Additionally, Fire Stations 37 (3430 East Foothill Boulevard) and 38 (1150 Linda Vista Avenue) will offer limited self-serve sand and bags. All four locations will be open from 8:00 AM. to 5:00 PM. Residents must present proof of Pasadena residency, with a limit of 10 sandbags per household while supplies last.
Local Meteorologist Honored
Altadena meteorologist and climate activist Edgar McGregor was honored for his life-saving efforts during the Eaton Fire on January 7, 2025. As flames approached his neighborhood, McGregor issued urgent social media warnings, advising residents to evacuate immediately. While evacuating his own family, he continued to post updates, emphasizing the severity of the situation. U.S. Congresswoman Judy Chu commended McGregor’s swift actions, stating that his dedication and the trust he had built within the community led many to heed his warnings, thereby preventing further casualties. The Eaton Fire resulted in significant destruction and loss of life, but McGregor’s proactive communication is credited with saving numerous lives.

Restaurant Spotlight: Sushigah
家 is pronounced as [gah] and means “a house” or “family” in Korean. Sushigah is owned by Korean Father & Son chefs who serve the freshest sushi and cook Japanese / Korean fusion cuisine. What I love about Sushigah is that it offers high-quality sushi with bar seating but also different dishes like soups, meats, and bowls. My favorite? The Bulgogi entrée that is served with sticky rice and miso soup. The bowl is stacked high with thinly sliced beer that is showered in garlicy, oniony goodness. They have sake happy hours deals too!
