Are you a space enthusiast? A fan of astronomy? Imagine being able to hear all about the wonders of the cosmos while enjoying a drink and a night out with friends and fellow space lovers! Look no further than Astronomy on Tap, a global phenomenon that brings informal science talks to local bars, creating an engaging and interactive experience for all who attend. Whether you’re deeply passionate about space or just curious about the universe, this event offers a unique opportunity to learn, socialize, and have fun in a laid-back atmosphere.

Astronomy on Tap Pasadena (Los Angeles)
In Los Angeles, Astronomy on Tap is organized by scientists from Caltech and takes place once a month on a Monday night at 7:30 PM. The event is held at the Dog Haus Biergarten in Old Town Pasadena, a lively venue with an outdoor patio that provides the perfect setting for a night of cosmic exploration. Best of all, it’s completely free and open to everyone—no reservations required (although, I’d suggest getting there early to grab a table because it gets quite packed).
Each event features two 15-minute talks by researchers in astronomy, physics, and space science, followed by an interactive Q&A session. But the fun doesn’t stop there! In between the talks, attendees can enjoy:
- Guided stargazing with telescopes – Get an up-close view of celestial wonders.
- Astro-themed pub trivia – Test your space knowledge against fellow attendees. You can compete as a team or as an individual. First, second, and third place winners get prizes too!
- Live music from Jason Achilles and Forrest Mitchell – Because nothing pairs better with the cosmos than live music.
And if you get hungry, Dog Haus also serves up delicious food, including their signature dogs, sliders, tater tots, burgers, and more—alongside its impressive selection of craft beers and cocktails.

A Brief History of Astronomy on Tap
The concept of Astronomy on Tap (AoT) was born in New York City in 2013, founded by Meg Schwamb and Emily Rice. It all started with an event at the Way Station in Brooklyn, which was such a hit that it quickly expanded. The founders coordinated more events, including the memorable Astronomy on Deck, held in the Space Shuttle Pavilion at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.
Thanks to the international nature of the astronomy community, the idea spread rapidly. In 2013, AoT Columbus was launched at the Brother’s Drake Meadery & Bar, and by 2014, events were happening in multiple U.S. cities and even abroad, including Chile, Canada, and Taiwan. The enthusiasm for space science, combined with the relaxed bar setting, proved to be a winning combination that drew in audiences from all backgrounds.
