THE DIGEST
Rain, Incoming!
In anticipation of potential rainfall following the recent Eaton Fire, the City of Pasadena is urging residents, especially those in affected areas, to take proactive measures against possible debris flows and flooding. The city recommends obtaining free sandbags available at designated locations, installing barriers to redirect water and debris, and clearing gutters and storm drains. Residents should exercise caution around downed power lines, avoid flood-prone areas, and be prepared for evacuation orders if necessary. The city is actively clearing storm drains, monitoring conditions, and providing resources to ensure community safety. Refer to guide for tips on how to protect your home. 🏠
Pasadena Air Quality
At a Pasadena City Council meeting, Caltech professor Paul Wennberg assured officials that air quality has largely returned to normal following the Eaton Fire, which burned over 14,000 acres and is now 95% contained. Despite improvements aided by clean desert air, officials discussed expanding the city’s network of “Purple Air” sensors to address monitoring gaps, especially in northern Pasadena. Acting Public Health Director Manuel Carmona emphasized the regional nature of air quality concerns, and Wennberg recommended deploying sensors at schools and advised against using leaf blowers to avoid re-disturbing particles. The City is collaborating with public health agencies to develop a comprehensive approach to air quality monitoring, reflecting its commitment to environmental resilience.
Black History Festival Update
Pasadena has canceled the parade portion of its annual Black History Festival and postponed the car show due to the impact of the recent Eaton Fire, which caused significant damage in the community. This year’s festival, focusing on recovery efforts in Altadena, Pasadena, and Glendale, will take place on February 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Robinson Park (1081 N. Fair Oaks Ave.). The event will feature performances originally scheduled for the parade, followed by festival activities. Vendors are encouraged to provide public assistance or services instead of selling items. “The committee hopes to bring resources and joy to help the community heal,” said Pixie Boyden, co-chair of the festival planning committee.
