THE DIGEST
YBMC Shifts Focus
In response to the recent Eaton Fire that has displaced numerous students and families in Pasadena and Altadena, the 16th Annual Young Black Males Conference (YBMC) has adapted its focus to offer restorative healing and community support. Scheduled for February 7, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Caltech, the event will host over 200 young men from 8th grade through college, primarily from the Pasadena Unified School District and nearby regions. The conference aims to provide essential resources, mentorship, and workshops tailored to address the unique challenges faced by these students in the aftermath of the fire.
LA County Approves Comprehensive Recovery Plan
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has approved a comprehensive recovery plan to assist affected residents and businesses. Initiated by Board Chair Kathryn Barger and Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath, the plan emphasizes immediate relief and long-term resilience, focusing on vulnerable populations by offering financial assistance and waiving certain building code requirements. The strategy includes streamlining permitting processes, reducing bureaucratic hurdles, and actively seeking funding from various sources. Additionally, extensive community outreach programs will be launched to guide individuals through the recovery process, ensuring transparency and accountability through regular monitoring by the County’s Auditor-Controller. The full motion can be found here.
The Keychain Project began as a heartfelt idea from Kate Sullivan, who, after losing her home and workspace of 25 years, suggested creating a memorial from the keys of homes lost in the recent wildfires. Volunteers, including Nancy Larrew and Caty Maxey, have come together to make this vision a reality, collecting donated house keys as a symbol of resilience and remembrance for those affected. Keys hold deep meaning—representing security, familiarity, and daily routines—and by repurposing them into a tribute, the project aims to offer healing and solidarity to impacted communities. Drop-off locations, such as Samy’s Camera in Pasadena, are being organized for key donations. To support this initiative, spread the word and save your keys.
